An Unexpected Plan ✨
Saturday afternoon in Chennai was as busy as ever.
T. Nagar was filled with people moving between clothing stores, jewellery shops, roadside stalls, and shopping complexes. The streets were crowded, shopkeepers called out to passing customers, and the smell of freshly prepared snacks drifted through the warm afternoon air.
An auto stopped near one of the busy shopping streets.
Aazhini stepped out first, adjusting the strap of her handbag, while Priya climbed out after her.
"Anna, inga irundhu konjam thalli stop pannirundha kooda parava illa. Ivlo traffic-la eppadi enga erndhu poradhu?" Priya muttered, looking at the road.
(Brother, you could have stopped a little further away. How are we supposed to get anywhere in this traffic?)
Aazhini laughed.
"Seri vidu, vandhutom la. Ippo enna shopping pannanum-nu sollu."
(Alright, leave it. We're here now, aren't we? Tell me what we need to shop for.)
Priya looked at her suspiciously.
"Unakku shopping panna avlo interest irukka? Illa seekiram mudichittu saapida poganum-ngradhu dhaan main plan-ah?"
(Are you really that interested in shopping? Or is your main plan to finish quickly and go eat?)
Aazhini gave her a sweet smile.
"Rendum dhaan. Aana saapadu konjam mukkiyam."
(Both. But food is a little more important.)
"Enakku theriyum!"
(I knew it!)
The two friends laughed and started walking down the street.
Their plan was simple: look around, buy a few things they needed, and spend some time together. There was no fixed list of shops and no need to rush.
They stopped first at a small accessories store.
Priya immediately became interested in the earrings displayed near the entrance. She picked up one pair, examined it, put it back, and reached for another.
Aazhini stood beside her, looking through the display.
"Indha pair nalla irukku," she said, pointing towards a simple pair of gold-toned earrings.
(This pair looks nice.)
Priya held them against her ears and checked the mirror.
"Hmm... okay-ah irukku."
(Hmm... they're okay.)
"Okay illa. Unakku nalla irukku. Vaangidu."
(Not just okay. They look good on you. Buy them.)
"Konjam neram paakkalaam."
(Let me look around a little more.)
Aazhini raised an eyebrow.
"Earrings dhaane? Pudichirundha vaangu. Illana adutha shop polaam."
(They're just earrings, aren't they? If you like them, buy them. Otherwise, let's go to the next shop.)
Priya turned towards her with an amused expression.
"Unakku oru porul pudichirundha udane decision eduthuduva, illaya?"
(You make a decision immediately when you like something, don't you?)
"Time waste panna enakku pidikkaadhu, Priya. Enakku enna suit aagum-nu enakku theriyum."
(I don't like wasting time, Priya. I know what suits me.)
"Fashion expert!"
"Thank you. Enakku theriyum."
(Thank you. I know!)
Priya laughed and finally bought the earrings.
From there, they walked into another store, browsed through a few handbags, and stopped at a clothing shop where Priya spent nearly fifteen minutes deciding whether she needed a new kurti.
Aazhini looked through the racks, found nothing she particularly liked, and wandered towards the exit.
"Azhu! Enga pora?"
(Azhu! Where are you going?)
"Velila wait panren. Un decision mudinja sollu."
(I'll wait outside. Let me know when you've made your decision.)
"Rendu nimisham!"
(Two minutes!)
Aazhini folded her arms.
"Un rendu nimisham-na minimum pathu nimisham."
(Your two minutes usually mean at least ten minutes.)
"Podi!"
(Get lost!)
A few minutes later, Priya emerged with a shopping bag.
Aazhini looked at it, then at her.
"Vaangittiya?"
(Did you buy it?)
Priya nodded proudly.
"Vaangitten."
(I bought it.)
"Appo mission successful. Next?"
(Then mission successful. What's next?)
"Dei, naan shopping-ku vandhirukken. Nee enna tour guide maadhiri next, next-nu kekkura?"
(Hey, I've come shopping. Why are you asking 'what's next' like a tour guide?)
Aazhini burst out laughing.
"Seri, vaa. Innum neraya shops irukku."
(Alright, come on. There are still plenty of shops.)
They continued walking, stopping occasionally to look at street displays and browse through shops that caught their attention. They weren't buying everything they saw. Sometimes they simply admired something, exchanged opinions, and moved on.
At one point, they passed a jewellery shop filled with colourful bangles.
Priya slowed down.
"Azhu, bangles paaru!"
(Azhu, look at those bangles!)
Aazhini glanced inside.
"Beautiful-ah irukku. Aana enakku ippo vendaam. Evening-ku edhaavadhu special-ah vaanganumna appo paakkalaam."
(They're beautiful. But I don't want any right now. If we need to buy something special for the evening, we can look then.)
Priya looked at her.
"Evening-ku enna special?"
(What's special about the evening?)
"Theriyala. Appo paakkalaam-nu sonnen."
(I don't know. I just said we can see later.)
"Unakku enna thonudho adha dhaan pesuva!"
(You just say whatever comes to your mind!)
Aazhini merely grinned and continued walking.
Neither of them knew that the evening was already waiting to surprise them.
---
They were crossing a small stretch of shops when a burst of colour caught Aazhini's eye.
She slowed down.
A few steps ahead, a clothing store had arranged a beautiful display near its entrance. Circular skirts in bright shades of red, green, blue, and pink hung beside embroidered cholis. Mirror-work dupattas shimmered beneath the sunlight, and rows of traditional jewellery completed the display.
Aazhini stopped walking.
Priya, who hadn't noticed anything, took another step before turning around.
"Enna di? Enna aachu?"
(What happened? What's wrong?)
Aazhini pointed towards the store.
"Priya... adhu paaru!"
(Priya... look at that!)
Priya followed her gaze.
For a moment, both of them simply looked at the display.
Then Priya's face brightened.
"Dandiya dresses!"
Aazhini's eyes lit up immediately.
The colourful outfits reminded her of the music, the rhythm of the dandiya sticks, the spinning skirts, and the joyful crowd dancing together. She had always loved dancing, and the thought of an entire evening filled with music was enough to make her forget everything else.
"Priya, Dandiya event innaikku dhaane?" Aazhini asked.
(Priya, the Dandiya event is tonight, right?)
"Aama di! Chennai-la innaikku night oru event irukku-nu naan engaayo paathen."
(Yes! I saw somewhere that there's an event happening in Chennai tonight.)
Aazhini turned towards her at once.
"Appo namma polaama?"
(Then shall we go?)
Priya smiled.
"Naan adha dhaan solla vandhen! Shopping-ku vandha namma, Dandiya-ku dress paathuttu irukkom. Idha vida nalla plan enna irukka mudiyum?"
(That's exactly what I was about to suggest! We came shopping, and now we're looking at Dandiya outfits. What better plan could there be?)
Aazhini didn't hesitate.
"Polaam!"
(Let's go!)
Priya laughed at how quickly she had agreed.
"Dei, oru nimisham kooda yosikkalaya?"
(Hey, didn't you even think about it for a second?)
"Edhukku yosikkanum? Enakku dance romba pidikkum. Music irukkum, dance irukkum, fun-ah irukkum. Namma kandippa poganum!"
(Why should I think about it? I love dancing. There'll be music, dancing and lots of fun. We definitely have to go!)
"Seri, appo mudivu pannitta."
(Alright, so you've made up your mind.)
"Already pannitten."
(I already have!)
Priya shook her head with a smile.
"Vaadi, first dress paappom."
(Come on, let's look at the outfits first.)
They entered the store together.
---
Inside, the shop was filled with colourful traditional outfits. A few customers were trying on lehengas, while the sales staff neatly arranged dupattas and matching accessories.
Priya walked towards a rack of blue and purple outfits.
Aazhini took her time looking around, carefully noticing the colours, embroidery, and patterns. She wasn't the kind of person who needed to try on every outfit to decide what suited her. She knew the shades she liked and the styles that worked for her.
Within a few minutes, she spotted an emerald-green lehenga with delicate gold embroidery and a matching dupatta.
She pulled it from the rack and held it against herself in front of a mirror.
Priya turned around.
"Azhu, already choose pannittiya?"
(Azhu, have you already chosen one?)
Aazhini looked at herself in the mirror, adjusted the dupatta over her shoulder, and nodded.
"Indha colour nalla irukku. Embroidery-um simple-ah irukku. Idhuve podhum."
(This colour looks nice. The embroidery is simple too. This one is enough.)
Priya came closer to inspect it.
"Unakku romba azhaga irukku, di. Especially indha green colour."
(It looks really beautiful on you, especially this green colour.)
Aazhini smiled.
"Adhaan. Idha vaangidalaam."
(Exactly. Let's buy this one.)
"Konjam vera options paakkariya?"
(Would you like to look at a few other options?)
"Vendaam. Enakku idhu pudichirukku. Vera edhaavadhu paakka aarambichaa, thevai illaadha confusion dhaan varum."
(No. I like this one. If I start looking at other options, I'll only end up getting confused for no reason.)
Priya laughed.
"Un shopping speed-ku oru award kudukkanum."
(You deserve an award for how quickly you shop.)
"Adha vaanguradhukku innoru shop poganum. Vendaam!"
(I'd have to go to another shop to collect it. No thanks!)
Both of them burst out laughing.
Aazhini selected a pair of elegant gold earrings and matching bangles to complete her outfit. Everything was chosen with care, and she was satisfied with her look without spending ages deciding.
Priya, on the other hand, was still exploring the racks.
She picked up a pink lehenga, considered it, and returned it. Then she tried holding a purple outfit against herself before moving towards a deep-blue lehenga decorated with silver mirror work.
Aazhini watched her for a while.
"Priya, indha blue dress try pannu."
(Priya, try this blue dress.)
Priya held it up.
"Idhuva?"
(This one?)
"Aama. Unakku blue nalla suit aagum. Andha silver work-um romba azhaga irukku."
(Yes. Blue will suit you well. The silver work is beautiful too.)
Priya went to try it on.
When she came out, Aazhini's face immediately brightened.
"Idhu dhaan! Romba nalla irukku."
(This is the one! It looks really good.)
Priya turned towards the mirror, looking at herself from different angles.
"Actually, enakkum pidichirukku."
(Actually, I like it too.)
"Appo vaangidu."
(Then buy it.)
"Seri, madam."
(Alright, madam.)
Before heading to the billing counter, Priya picked out a pair of silver earrings and a few matching accessories.
As they waited to pay, Aazhini suddenly looked at the two outfits again.
"Priya, Ananya-kum Shalini-kum enna?"
(Priya, what about Ananya and Shalini?)
Priya turned towards her.
"Enna enna?"
(What about them?)
"Avangalum namma kooda vandhirundha evlo nalla irundhirukkum. Naalu perum serndhu Dandiya pona semma fun-ah irukkum la?"
(It would've been so nice if they had come with us too. The four of us going to Dandiya together would be so much fun, wouldn't it?)
Priya's eyes widened slightly.
"Correct-ah sonna! Avangalayum koopidalaam."
(You're right! Let's invite them too.)
Aazhini thought for a moment.
"Wait. Avangalukkum dresses vaangidalaama?"
(Wait. Shall we buy outfits for them too?)
Priya looked at her, then smiled.
"Dei, adhu nalla idea! Aana avangalukku endha colour pudikkum-nu theriyume?"
(Hey, that's a good idea! But do we know which colours they like?)
"Konjam theriyum la. Ananya-ku bright colours pidikkum. Shalini-ku elegant-ah irukkura designs pidikkum."
(We know a little, don't we? Ananya likes bright colours, and Shalini likes elegant designs.)
Priya nodded thoughtfully.
"Seri. Avangalukku suit aagura maadhiri choose pannalaam. Pudikkala-na exchange pannikkalaam."
(Alright. Let's choose something that might suit them. If they don't like it, they can exchange it.)
So, before leaving the store, the two friends returned to the racks.
They chose a bright pink outfit for Ananya and a graceful wine-red outfit for Shalini, keeping their friends' tastes in mind. They also checked the sizes as carefully as they could before asking the staff to pack everything separately.
Soon, four outfits were ready in their shopping bags.
Priya looked at the bags and laughed.
"Paathiya? Shopping-ku vandhom. Ippo Dandiya-ku naalu perukkum dress vaangittom."
(Look at us! We came shopping, and now we've bought Dandiya outfits for all four of us.)
Aazhini smiled.
"Adhu dhaan friendship!"
(That's friendship!)
Priya slipped her arm through Aazhini's.
"Seri, madam. Ippo kelambalaama?"
(Alright, madam. Shall we leave now?)
Aazhini nodded.
Then she noticed a familiar orange glow from a stall across the street.
Her eyes widened.
"Priya..."
Priya immediately recognised that expression.
"Enna?"
(What is it?)
Aazhini pointed towards the stall.
"Jalebi."
Priya stared at her.
"Unakku vera edhuvum kannukku theriyadha?"
(Can't you see anything else apart from food?)
Aazhini smiled.
---
The two friends crossed the street and walked towards the sweet stall.
Fresh jalebis were being lifted from hot oil and dipped into syrup. Their bright orange spirals glistened under the light, and the sweet aroma made Aazhini's mouth water.
She ordered a portion without a second thought.
Priya watched her.
"Azhu, ivlo sweet saapitta bore adikkaadha?"
(Azhu, don't you ever get tired of eating so many sweets?)
Aazhini looked at her as if she'd asked something impossible.
"Sweet-na eppadi bore adikkum?"
(How can anyone get tired of sweets?)
She took a bite.
Her eyes closed briefly as she enjoyed the sweetness.
"Mm! Priya, idhu romba nalla irukku!"
(Mm! Priya, this is really delicious!)
Priya laughed.
"Unakku sugar konjam over-ah irundhaalum parava illa pola."
(I guess you don't mind even if it's extra sweet.)
Aazhini shook her head.
"Over sweet-na dhaan innum nalla irukkum!"
(The sweeter it is, the better!)
"Unna vechu oru sweet shop aarambikkalaam."
(We should start a sweet shop with you.)
"Good idea. Nee manager-ah iru."
(Good idea. You be the manager.)
"Enakku sambalam evlo?"
(How much will my salary be?)
"Jalebi free-ah kidaikkum."
(You'll get free jalebi.)
Priya considered it for a second.
"Deal!"
They laughed together, sharing the jalebis as they walked towards a nearby ice cream stall.
The moment Aazhini spotted the ice cream display, she stopped again.
Priya turned slowly.
"Please, Aazhini. Ippo ice cream-um venuma?"
(Please, Aazhini. Do you want ice cream now too?)
Aazhini nodded with complete seriousness.
"Aama."
(Yes.)
"Jalebi saaptadhukku appuram?"
(After eating jalebi?)
"Adhu vera category. Idhu vera category."
(That's a different category. This is another category.)
Priya covered her face with one hand.
"Un logic-ku naan thothutten."
(I give up. I can't argue with your logic.)
Aazhini grinned.
"Appo ice cream vaangalaam."
(Then let's buy ice cream.)
They ordered their favourite flavours and found a place to sit for a few minutes. Aazhini happily enjoyed every spoonful, while Priya continued teasing her about how food always came first.
Their conversation drifted from college memories to job applications, from silly classroom incidents to their plans for the coming week.
For a little while, the uncertainty surrounding Aazhini's interview results didn't seem quite so heavy.
She still wanted that job. She still wanted to build her own future.
But she also knew she couldn't put her entire life on hold while waiting for an answer.
Sometimes, she needed days like this, too.
Days filled with laughter, good food, and people who made her feel like herself.
---
As they finished their ice creams, Priya suddenly remembered their friends.
"Dei, Ananya-kum Shalini-kum call pannalaam. Avangalukku innum Dandiya plan sollave illa."
(Hey, let's call Ananya and Shalini. We haven't told them about the Dandiya plan yet.)
Aazhini nodded eagerly.
"Aama! Dress surprise-um solla vendaam. Call pannu."
(Yes! Don't tell them about the outfit surprise either. Call them.)
Priya took out her phone and started a group call.
After a few rings, Ananya answered.
"Hello! Enna rendu perum? Shopping mudinjiducha?"
(Hello! What's up, you two? Have you finished shopping?)
"Shopping mudinjiduchu," Priya replied. "Aana innaikku night-ku oru plan irukku."
(We've finished shopping. But we have a plan for tonight.)
Shalini joined the call.
"Enna plan?"
(What's the plan?)
Aazhini leaned closer to the phone.
"Innaikku night Dandiya event-ku porom. Neenga rendu perum engaloda vareengala?"
(We're going to a Dandiya event tonight. Will you two come with us?)
There was a brief silence.
Then Ananya exclaimed, "Dandiya-va? Kandippa varen!"
(Dandiya? Of course I'll come!)
Shalini laughed.
"Dei, neenga eppo decide panneenga?"
(Hey, when did you two decide this?)
"Konja nerathukku munnadi dhaan," Priya replied. "Aana ungalukku oru surprise irukku."
(Just a little while ago. But we have a surprise for you.)
"Enna surprise?" Ananya asked.
Aazhini smiled mischievously.
"Naanga ungalukku rendu perukkum Dandiya dresses vaangittom!"
(We've bought Dandiya outfits for both of you!)
"Enna?! Engalukka?" both girls exclaimed together.
(What?! For us?)
Priya laughed.
"Aama! Unakku bright pink outfit, Shalini. Unakku wine-red outfit. Ungalukku pudikkumnu nenaichu choose pannom."
(Yes! A bright pink outfit for you, Ananya, and a wine-red one for you, Shalini. We chose them thinking you would like them.)
"Dei, idhu romba sweet!" Shalini said. "Neenga rendu perum engalai nenachu vaangineengala?"
(Hey, that's so sweet! You two bought them thinking of us?)
"Of course, di!" Aazhini replied warmly. "Naalu perum serndhu pona dhaan full fun."
(Of course! It'll be much more fun if all four of us go together.)
Ananya sounded delighted.
"Seri, appo naan kandippa varen! Dress eppo kuduppeenga?"
(Alright, then I'm definitely coming! When will you give me the outfit?)
"Evening meet pannumbodhu kudukkarom," Priya said. "Neenga rendu perum veetukku poi ready aagittu vaanga."
(We'll give them to you when we meet this evening. You two go home and get ready.)
Shalini agreed immediately.
"Seri! Venue-ku direct-ah pogalama, illa first meet pannalama?"
(Alright! Shall we go directly to the venue, or meet somewhere first?)
Aazhini thought for a moment.
"Ellarum veetukku poi ready aagittu evening-la meet pannalaam. Appuram serndhu venue-ku polaam."
(Let's all go home, get ready, and meet in the evening. Then we can go to the venue together.)
"Super!" Ananya replied. "Aana innaikku yaarum seekiram veetukku porom-nu solla koodaadhu. Full-ah dance pannittu dhaan poganum!"
(Great! But nobody is allowed to say they're going home early tonight. We're going to dance to our hearts' content before leaving!)
Aazhini's face lit up.
"Deal!"
After confirming their plans, they ended the call.
Priya put her phone away and looked at Aazhini.
"Seri, madam. Shopping, jalebi, ice cream, Dandiya plan. Innaikku unakku vera enna venum?"
(Alright, madam. Shopping, jalebi, ice cream and a Dandiya plan. What else do you want today?)
Aazhini pretended to think.
"Hmm..."
Priya narrowed her eyes.
"Enna ippo?"
(What now?)
Aazhini smiled sweetly.
"Innum oru jalebi saapitta nalla irukkum."
(It would be nice to have one more jalebi.)
"Aazhini!"
Her laughter rang through the street as Priya shook her head in disbelief.
Their shopping bags were full, their friends were joining them that evening, and the thought of dancing beneath colourful lights had already filled Aazhini with excitement.
Neither of them knew what the night would bring.
For now, they had a plan, a little shopping to carry home, and the promise of a wonderful evening together.
Sometimes, the best memories began without a plan at all.
An ordinary afternoon, a spontaneous plan, and a night waiting to become a memory.
To be continued
